Justices of the Wyoming Supreme Court
Chief Justice Barton R. Voigt Barton R. Voigt was
raised in Thermopolis, Wyoming. He obtained a B.A. and M.A. in American
History, as well as a J.D., at the University of Wyoming. He practiced law in
his home town for ten years, serving as Hot Springs County and Prosecuting
Attorney for two terms. After two years as a county judge in Gillette, he was
for eight years a district judge in Douglas. He was appointed to the Supreme
Court on March 29, 2001, and became Chief Justice on July 1, 2006.
Justice William U. Hill William U. Hill was appointed
to the Wyoming Supreme Court on November 3, 1998, after serving as Wyoming
Attorney General since March, 1995. Justice Hill was born in Montgomery,
Alabama and raised and educated in Riverton, Wyoming. He received his B.A. from
the University of Wyoming in 1970 and was graduated from U.W. College of Law in
1974. Earlier in his career, Justice Hill served as both an Assistant United
States Attorney and an Assistant Attorney General for Wyoming, and was engaged
in private practice in Riverton, Wyoming, Seattle, Washington, and Cheyenne,
Wyoming. He also served as Chief of Staff-Chief Counsel for Senator Malcolm
Wallop in Washington, D.C. Hill served as Chief Justice from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2006.
Justice Michael Golden Michael Golden has been a
member of the court since 1988, and served as the Chief Justice from 1994 to
1996. He received his B.A. from the University of Wyoming in 1964, and
graduated from the U.W. College of Law in 1967. Justice Golden earned an LL.M.
in Judicial Process from the University of Virginia in 1992. Prior to his
appointment to the Supreme Court he practiced law in Casper and Rawlins after
serving four years in the U.S. Army JAG Corps. Justice Golden was retained in
the 1990 retention election.
Justice E. James Burke E. James Burke was appointed
to the Wyoming Supreme Court in January, 2005. Prior to his appointment,
Justice Burke served as a district judge in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Justice Burke
received his B.S. degree from St. Joseph’s College in Philadelphia, PA in 1971.
Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at F.E. Warren
AFB in Cheyenne until 1974. He obtained his J.D. from the University of Wyoming
in 1977 and engaged in private practice in Cheyenne until his appointment to
the bench in 2001.
Justice Marilyn S. Kite Marilyn S. Kite was appointed
by Governor Jim Geringer to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of
Justice Richard Macy. Justice Kite was sworn into office June 2, 2000. She
received her B.A. from the University of Wyoming in 1970 with Honors and her
J.D. from the University of Wyoming Law School in 1974. Prior to her
appointment to the Wyoming Supreme Court, Justice Kite served as Senior
Assistant Attorney General for the State of Wyoming from 1974 through 1978. She
entered private practice when she joined the law firm of Holland & Hart in
1979, and she was a Partner in the Jackson Office until her appointment to the
Wyoming Supreme Court.
