Justices of the Wyoming Supreme Court
Chief Justice Marilyn S. Kite Marilyn S. Kite was appointed
by Governor Jim Geringer to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of
Justice Richard Macy. Justice Kite was sworn into office June 2, 2000. She
received her B.A. from the University of Wyoming in 1970 with Honors and her
J.D. from the University of Wyoming Law School in 1974. Prior to her
appointment to the Wyoming Supreme Court, Justice Kite served as Senior
Assistant Attorney General for the State of Wyoming from 1974 through 1978. She
entered private practice when she joined the law firm of Holland & Hart in
1979, and she was a Partner in the Jackson Office until her appointment to the
Wyoming Supreme Court. She was appointed as Chief Justice on July 1, 2010.
Justice William U. Hill William U. Hill was appointed
to the Wyoming Supreme Court on November 3, 1998, after serving as Wyoming
Attorney General since March, 1995. Justice Hill was born in Montgomery,
Alabama and raised and educated in Riverton, Wyoming. He received his B.A. from
the University of Wyoming in 1970 and was graduated from U.W. College of Law in
1974. Earlier in his career, Justice Hill served as both an Assistant United
States Attorney and an Assistant Attorney General for Wyoming, and was engaged
in private practice in Riverton, Wyoming, Seattle, Washington, and Cheyenne,
Wyoming. He also served as Chief of Staff-Chief Counsel for Senator Malcolm
Wallop in Washington, D.C. Hill served as Chief Justice from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2006.
Justice Barton R. Voigt Barton R. Voigt was
raised in Thermopolis, Wyoming. He obtained a B.A. and M.A. in American
History, as well as a J.D., at the University of Wyoming. He practiced law in
his home town for ten years, serving as Hot Springs County and Prosecuting
Attorney for two terms. After two years as a county judge in Gillette, he was
for eight years a district judge in Douglas. He was appointed to the Supreme
Court on March 29, 2001, and served as Chief Justice from July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2010.
Justice E. James Burke E. James Burke was appointed
to the Wyoming Supreme Court in January, 2005. Prior to his appointment,
Justice Burke served as a district judge in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Justice Burke
received his B.S. degree from St. Joseph’s College in Philadelphia, PA in 1971.
Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at F.E. Warren
AFB in Cheyenne until 1974. He obtained his J.D. from the University of Wyoming
in 1977 and engaged in private practice in Cheyenne until his appointment to
the bench in 2001.
Justice Michael K. Davis Michael Davis was appointed to
the Supreme Court by Governor Matt Mead on August 30, 2012. Before his appointment
to the Supreme Court, Justice Davis served as a district judge in the First Judicial
District in Cheyenne. He served in the United States Army from 1973 to 1975. He
received a B.A. summa cum laude from Western State College of Colorado in 1977, and
a Juris Doctorate with Honor from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1980.
He practiced law with the firm of Yonkee and Toner in Sheridan from 1980 to 2006,
and from a Cheyenne branch office of the firm from 2006 until 2008, when he became a
district judge. He is a Judicial Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
